Building a faster freight locomotive meant lengthening the boiler, which moved the firebox from over the drivers to behind them. A trailing truck was added to support the firebox and the 2-8-2 Mikado was born. By the beginning of World War I, it had all but replaced the Consolidation as the standard freight locomotive in the U.S.
